On June 16, 2011, the Pottstown School Board approved a $51.1 million budget for 2011-2012 to educate about 3,100 students.

The district raised taxes 1.9 percent -- the maximum without a public referendum -- to fund the budget. You can view the final budget by clicking here.

Unfortunately, the published annual budget is not sufficiently detailed to enable school board members and citizens to assess how funds are spent.

Earlier this year, we requested the projected line item budget for the 2011-2012 school year, which we received May 18. The budget contained information on the general fund, which accounts for the lion's share of district spending, but did not contain several smaller funds: the cafeteria fund, the athletic fund, the data fund, the elementary school fund, and the capital reserve fund.

The budget does not reflect a new contract with the Federation of Pottstown Teachers approved by the board on June 2.

The new contract reduces the cost of the standard health insurance plan for Federation members, but it provides an across-the board-salary increase of 1 percent.

Also, the line item budget does not reflect some last-minute changes in the budget.

Using our own resources, we then retyped the line item budget information into an Excel spreadsheet. A listing of personnel salaries and benefits may be found on the "Personnel / Wages" page of this Web site.

Other expenditures from the general fund may be found below, categorized by building. The administration budget contains district-wide expenses as well as building expenses.

These numbers reflect the budget as we received it. In the coming weeks, we will seek clarification on some items and updated figures to reflect last-minute changes to the budget.

We also listing the operating Pottstown's high school, middle school, and five elementary schools for the most recent year available. By far, our elementary schools are the least expensive to operate per student served. To see a chart comparing costs, click here.
